Nuclear Engineering Minor
Effective Fall 2026, the Engineering Department will offer a minor in Nuclear Engineering. This may be of interest to any students wishing to pursue a career in nuclear power generation. The Nuclear Engineering Minor will be open to any undergraduate registered at Maritime College. Students may declare the minor once they have completed MATH 101 and MATH 102, as well as CHEM 121 & 122 and PHYS 201 & 203, all with a C- or better. To declare a minor, the student should complete a Change of Curriculum form, found on the Registrar's webpage.
Required Courses
The minor consists of 4 courses: 3 core courses, and 1 elective course. The courses, semester(s) in which they are offered, and pre-requisites are listed below. Students who fall slightly short of pre-requisite requirements (for example, a D in one of the pre-requisites for ENGR 330 but an otherwise strong academic record) should see Dr. Winfrey to be evaluated for an override.
Core Courses
Must complete all 3.
| Course | Semester(s) Offered | Pre-requisites |
|---|---|---|
| ENGR 330 Fundamentals of Nuclear Science and Engineering | Fall | Pre-requisites: MATH 102, CHEM 121 & 122 and PHYS 201 & 203, all with a C- or better Co-requisite: MATH 211 |
| ENGR 331 Radiation Sources, Interactions, and Shielding | Fall | Pre-requisites: MATH 102, CHEM 121 & 122 and PHYS 201 & 203, all with a C- or better Co-requisite: MATH 211 |
| ENGR 400 Nuclear Analysis | Spring | MATH 212, ENGR 330, and ENGR 331, all with a C- or better |
Elective COurses
Select one, may not be a course required by the student's program.
| Course | Semester(s) Offered | Prerequisites |
|---|---|---|
| ENGR 350 Automation & Control Systems | Both | MATH 102 |
| ENGR 394 Electromagnetic Fields | Fall | PHYS 201, MATH 212 |
| ENGR 453 Modern Concepts | Fall | ENGR 344 |
| ENGR 454 Vibrations | Spring | ENGR 244, MATH 212 |
| ENGR 485 Electrical Power Systems | Both | ENGR 380 |
| ENGR 495 Marine Electrical Systems | Both | ENGR 380 |
| ENGR 497 AC & DC Power Distribution Systems | Spring | ENGR 395 |
Double-Counting Courses
The courses used to fulfill the minor may also be used to fulfill an Engineering Elective or Free Elective, but not a named course in the major. For example, students whose program requires ENGR 350 must take a different course as the elective for the Nuclear Engineering Minor.
