The Maritime and Naval Studies program is flexible enough to allow a student to tailor the program to their interests, and designed for professionals looking to advance their careers.
With online and on-campus courses, the master of science degree program focuses on maritime and naval history, literature, transportation and environmental policy. A 31-credit degree, it can be completed in three semesters.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of a Master of Science in Maritime Studies and Naval Studies, the graduate will be able to:
- Prepare research papers that draw upon both a broad range of primary sources and secondary sources.
- Demonstrate skills in hands-on work with documents and texts, including archival work and in the digital humanities.
- Analyze the intersection of the humanities and the maritime worlds.
- Disseminate findings, discoveries, and conclusions to broader publics, both through traditional scholarly journals and through web platforms.
Students may also choose to earn a U.S. Coast Guard deck license, which qualifies them to work on board commercial vessels. The license program requires a student to live near campus in order to participate in the regiment of cadets, a disciplined lifestyle program unaffiliated with the U.S. military. The license-option program requires students to complete additional licensure courses and participate in summer sea term.
