Title VI
SUNY Maritime College is committed to fostering a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive educational and working environment in which all students, faculty, staff, and members of our campus community are treated with dignity and respect. Consistent with our institutional mission and the values of the State University of New York, the College is dedicated to promoting equal opportunity, preventing discrimination and harassment, and ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to learn, work, and succeed in an environment free from unlawful discrimination.
What is Title VI?
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. These protections extend to discrimination based on shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics, including circumstances involving actual or perceived membership in a group defined by such characteristics.
SUNY Maritime College stands firmly against antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, and all other forms of unlawful discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. The safety, well-being, and dignity of our campus community are fundamental to our educational mission and to preparing future leaders for the maritime industry and beyond.
The College is committed to ensuring that students and employees are informed of their rights and responsibilities under applicable federal and state laws, SUNY policies, and College procedures. Information regarding nondiscrimination protections, reporting options, complaint procedures, and available resources will be communicated to the campus community on a regular basis.
The Title VI Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the College’s response to reports and complaints involving discrimination, harassment, or retaliation that may fall within the protection of Title VI.
Reporting Discrimination, Harassment, or Retaliation
SUNY Maritime College encourages individuals who experience, witness, or become aware of possible discrimination, harassment, or retaliation to bring their concerns forward.
Reports may be submitted to the College’s designated Title VI Coordinator or other appropriate campus officials in accordance with established reporting procedures.
Individuals who report concerns will be provided with information about applicable complaint procedures, available resources, and options for addressing the reported conduct.
Retaliation against any individual for making a good-faith report, participating in an investigation, or exercising rights protected under Title VI is prohibited.
The College will review reports promptly and impartially and take appropriate action consistent with applicable law, SUNY policies, College procedures, and the rights of all involved parties.
Our Commitment
SUNY Maritime College remains dedicated to fostering a campus community grounded in mutual respect, accountability, equal opportunity, and inclusion. Through education, awareness, and consistent application of our nondiscrimination policies, we strive to ensure that every member of our community can participate fully in the College’s academic, professional, and campus life.
